Kimba Griffith’s trademark sound is one of light-footed swinging vocals, finely enunciated lyrics and a gift for finding the heart of the song. In this debut offering with her septet, Kimba pairs her timeless and elegant vocal with lush horn arrangements, virtuosic soloing and a driving rhythm section to deliver a cohesive and dynamic selection of tunes that are instantly captivating. Making her Debut at Bird’s Basement on March 30, Kimba will play selections from her album ‘Each Time the First Time’ as well as some brand new arrangements by her longtime collaborator Adrian Perger.
Kimba has been a fixture on the Melbourne Jazz Scene for more than a decade and a half, growing up on the trad and bop influenced sounds of the Fitzroy Jazz collective. After playing across three continents including spells at The Edinburgh Festival, the Jazz Street Festivals of Japan and tours of Japan and Europe, Kimba has released albums locally with her husband and muse Ryan Griffith (Kimba and Ryan) and made her Wangaratta Festival Debut in 2016 with her jazz happening ‘The Songs that Saved Your Life’ project, playing with some of Australia’s most lauded improvising musicians (Julien Wilson, Tamara Murphy, Niko Schauble, Ryan Griffith).
