Fresh from his breath-taking performances as band leader and front man of ‘Nothing Compares 2 Prince’, legendary Minneapolis artist St Paul Peterson (The Family/fDeluxe/The Time) returns to Melbourne for a series of shows in July.
This time around St. Paul & The Minneapolis Funk Allstars will be:
St Paul (bass/vocals/keyboards)
A Bird’s favorite St. Paul was a teenage wunderkind who performed keys with The Time in Purple Rain before signing to Prince's Paisley Park label as lead singer of The Family ('Nothing Compares 2 U'), is acknowledged as one of the finest musicians to emerge from the Twin Cities. As the leader of fDeluxe (formerly The Family) St. Paul has been the driving force behind the 2 critically acclaimed comeback albums that have seen the group perform sold out shows in England, France, Holland, Belgium, Australia and Japan, as well as their native USA. A mainstay of the Minneapolis music scene St. Paul has scored R&B and Pop hits as a solo artist, contributed to a number of albums for Paisley Park (Jevetta Steele, Mavis Staples, Nona Gaye, Rosie Gaines) and written for acts as varied as The Corrs, Paula Abdul, The Veronicas, George Benson and David Sanborn. Renowned as a thrilling live performer comfortable in every musical genre – complementing an impressive and ever-growing list of artists which includes Stevie Wonder, Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs, Lionel Richie, Reba McIntire, Kenny Loggins, The Beach Boys, Little Richard, Boy George, Robert Palmer, Dolly Parton and Oleta Adams.
Oliver Leiber (guitar)
Oliver Leiber's first big success came when he produced songs for Paula Abdul's first album,’Forever Your Girl’ while based in the Twin Cities. Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, Leiber wrote the Minneapolis sound inspired hit singles ‘Opposites Attract’, ‘It’s Just The Way That You Love Me’ and ‘Forever Your Girl’. As a producer and/or writer Oliver’s resume includes names such as Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, The Corrs and many many more. Early in his career he was a member of the Jesse Johnson produced group TaMara & The Seen and has written/produced tracks for The Revolution’s Bobby Z as well as Prince proteges Sheena Easton and Elisa Fiorillo, Oliver has worked closely with St Paul over the years and recently has produced for a number of tracks for fDeluxe as well as acts such as Vintage Trouble. Kesha, Adam Lambert and Beth Hart.
Gene Lake (Drums)
Making his debut as a member of the All-Stars, Gene Lake is a mid-western drummer who cut his teeth on funk and jazz. Gene Lake embodies the contradictions of modern music. His resume reflects his passion for the great funk icons of the 1970s and 1980s such as Parliament/Funkadelic and the Time, as well as his longstanding ties to the jazz world. Gene Lake has been playing with a stunningly diverse range of artists: from r&b group Surface in the 1980s to the “new wave” of r&b acts such as Me’shell NdegeOcello, Maxwell, and D’Angelo in the 1990s; from jazz innovators Steve Coleman and Henry Threadgill, to fusion legends Joe Zawinul and Marcus Miller; from jazz/rap group Opus Akoben to acts that defy categorization, such as the wildly original rock/funk/jazz fusion group Screaming Headless Torsos.
Jason Peterson DeLaire (keyboards/sax/vocals)
Also making his All-Stars debut, JP is a member of the well-known musical Peterson Family of Minneapolis. He is proficient on keyboards and saxophone, as well as being a talented singer, songwriter and producer. Currently touring with Michael Bolton, he has also toured nationally and internationally with renowned artists such as Prince, Alexander O’Neal, Richard Marx, Oleta Adams, Solo and Cherrelle. Jason has also done studio work with Bobby Brown, jazz legend Ben Sidran, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis’ Flyte Tyme Productions and Prince’s Paisley Park. He contributed to a number of tracks on fDeluxe/The Family’s critically acclaimed reunion album ‘Gaslight’ and co-wrote tracks for Nathan East’s #1 Billboard Jazz CD ‘Reverence’. Jason attended Berklee School of Music in Boston, studying film score and musical harmony.

Popularised by Prince's mega hit movie 'Purple Rain' and its accompanying soundtrack 'The Minneapolis Sound' became a musical juggernaut that spawned hits from artists such as The Time, Vanity 6, Morris Day, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Sheila E, Jody Watley, The Jets, Ready For The World and many more.
