Urbanity is the band co-led by guitarist (and Latin Grammy Award-nominated producer) Albare and Grammy Award-nominated pianist Phil Turcio. Their urbane blend of relaxed grooves and melodic interplay is showcased on their recent CD release on US-based label, Alfi Records, Urbanity. Already, three singles from Urbanity, including an instrumental version of The Eagles classic, 'Desperado', have climbed towards the top of the Smooth Jazz charts in the USA.
As guitarist, composer, bandleader and producer, Albare was the pioneer of the 'acid jazz' genre in Australia in the late 1980s. He has continued to record and perform at home and abroad, with a number of distinguished colleagues, including Antonio Sanchez, Hendrik Meurkens and George Garzone, to name a few.
Phil Turcio (piano, keyboards, programming, co-producer) has been a frequent collaborator with Albare for over 20 years, in which time they have developed an uncanny rapport. They formed Urbanity in 2016, to record Urban Soul for Alfi Records. It reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Smooth Jazz charts, and was no. 70 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart in 2017.
For this performance, Albare and Phil Turcio will be joined by two accomplished younger generation players on the Melbourne jazz scene, in bassist Peter Mollica and drummer Kieran Rafferty.
“A prolific player that shows he doesn’t have to be way out there to make his point and have himself heard, it really is like Wes Montgomery riding the space shuttle that’ll take us to Mars.” - Chris Spector, Midwest Record Review
“The simultaneous combination of feelings and emotions, especially when produced by experiences, memories, and stimulations pleasing to the heart, body, and soul.” This describes Albare’s current offerings very well.” - Scott Albin, Jazz Time
“For the uninitiated, the sound of Albare can best be linked to the classic Wes Montgomery meets George Benson riff pulled off with flair and precision.” - Brent Black, Critical Jazz
