Bird's Basement again leads the way in giving Australian music lovers the chance to explore the vibrant rhythms and colours of Latin Jazz, with a 3-week Latin Jazz Festival, from 7-25 August. The first band to be featured will be ALBARE iTD All Stars.
Guitarist and composer ALBARE first made an impact on the Australian music scene in the early '90s, when he introduced the 'acid jazz' here. Since then, Albare has broadened his musical palette via regular touring and recording projects in Australia, the USA and Europe.
The melodic charm of Brazilian jazz, and the subtle rhythmic sophistication of Latin Jazz in general, resonate with Albare, and have become key ingredients in his sound. This is particularly true with ALBARE iTD All Stars, the acronym meaning International Travel Diary. This all-star band was first assembled in 2012 to record the CD, Long Way. ALBARE iTD All Stars have since performed at clubs and festivals from Seoul to Melbourne, Paris to New York. A second CD, The Road Ahead, was released in 2013.
This Reunion edition of ALBARE iTD All Stars maintains the band's all-star reputation. Joining ALBARE (guitar) will be his colleague from his other current band, Urbanity, pianist and keyboardist Phil Turcio; and three Venezuelan-born musicians who are now established as in-demand players on the New York jazz scene.
Percussionist Luisito Quintero is best known as an expert timbalero; he has enhanced bands led by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Tito Puente, to name just a few; bassist Ricardo Rodriguez regularly works with Arturo O'Farrill and Samuel Torres; while drummer Pablo Bencid is featured with Kamarata Jazz, La Clave Secreta, Either Orchestra, Samuel Torres, and many more.
It is easy to claim 'all-star' status for a band. But consider this: each of these musicians has been nominated for a prestigious Latin Grammy award, with the exceptions of Luisito (who has also won a Grammy), and Phil (who was nominated for a Grammy in the jazz category in 2008).
For their season at Bird's Basement, ALBARE iTD All Stars will revisit the original music developed for previous tours and recordings; and they intend to adapt some favourite jazz standards (like 'Bluesette' and 'Round Midnight') to suit a modern Latin groove.
